Cavan and the Shannon Source One day tour 185km From the county town of Cavan head north eastwards for Cootehill, visit Bellamont Forest and House. Take the Shercock road from Cootehill, after 5km a signpost at the left directs you to the impressive Cohaw court cairn.
Continue to Shercock enjoying lake views over Lough Sillan on the way. From Shercock the next town is Bailieborough and on to Virginia.
There are fine examples of drumlin landscape on this route. Lough Ramor at Virginia is best seen from the grounds of the Park Hotel. Ballyjamesduff is next on our jouney, immortalised in song by Percy French and on to Mountnugent and the shores of Lough Sheelin. From here there are two choices, on through Ballinagh, the other through Lough Gowna and Arva to meet at Killeshandra.
Between here and Cavan town lies a maze of beautiful lake waters, the focal point for touring visitors is Killykeen Forest Park.
From Killeshandra continue towards Ballyconnell where a glimpse of Cavan's mountainous region in the north west can be enjoyed.
